Body doubling changed my life (and my laundry pile).

Chapter 01A friend, on mute, on a screen

The first time I did my tax return in one sitting, it was because my friend Meg was on a video call, silently doing her own admin, three hundred miles away. Neither of us spoke for two hours. At the end, we both said thank you and hung up. And that is body doubling.

A body double is a person whose gentle, uninterested presence somehow unlocks the part of your brain that has been refusing to fold a single towel for eleven days. They do not help. They do not coach. They just exist, quietly, in the same visual field as you and your terrible pile of admin.

It should not work. It absolutely works.

I do not fully understand the neurology. Something about co-regulation, external accountability, the tiny social pressure of not wanting to be seen doing nothing. What I do know is that a two-year-old email got answered, a bin got emptied, and I finally matched every sock in the house.

Chapter 02How to try it

Text a trusted friend. Say can I sit on a silent video call with you for an hour while I do a horrible task. Agree a start time. Agree an end time. Mute yourselves. Do not talk. Do not perform. Do the horrible thing.

If you do not have a person for it, there are apps, Discord servers, and quiet co-working streams full of strangers doing exactly the same thing. The magic is not the person. It is being witnessed, very gently, by someone who does not want anything from you.
